Traumatic Brain Injury Resources Definitions and Causes Brain injury refers to an injury in which an insult to the brain causes damage to the brain. Brain injuries are often described as either traumatic or acquired based on the cause of the injury. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an insult to the brain which is caused by an external physical force. Traumatic brain injuries occur during everyday activities, including: falls, motor vehicle crashes, assaults, and sports injuries, including concussions. Acquired brain injury (ABI) is an injury to the brain caused by some medical conditions, including strokes, encephalitis, aneurysms, anoxia (lack of oxygen), metabolic disorders, meningitis, or brain tumors. According to the Brain Injury Association of America, a brain injury can result in “an impairment of cognitive abilities or physical functioning. It can also result in the disturbance of behavioral or emotional functioning.” Veterans In response to the many veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with war related injuries, including TBI, DRNJ’s goal is to promote awareness of our free services to veterans, National Guard and Reserve organizations. One of our programs, the Protection and Advocacy for Individuals with Traumatic Brain Injury (PATBI) program, has been a recipient of federal funding since 2003. This program ensures that individuals with traumatic brain injury and their families have access to free legal assistance, advocacy services, and information and referral.
